DESCRIPTION:RSPB Scotland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSome of the greatest spectacles of nature take place at dusk. Join our guide to enjoy Svalbard barnacle geese descending on the sandflat and reserve to roost. ¾mile/1.3km walk down to the shore\, to view geese as they fly over onto the sandflats. There may be some standing around for a while once in position. Please wrap up warmly\, come prepared for cold or wet weather and bring a torch for safe return to the car park afterwards. All children must be accompanied by ticketed adults.  \n\n\n\nPlease note\, as the reserve location is prone to flooding\, we ask that all individuals/groups attending provide a telephone number\, so we can notify you in advance if the event is cancelled. \n\n\n\nNote that access over the sand-dunes is not suitable for normal wheelchairs. Families welcome (though not suitable for younger children\, as may involve some standing around while waiting). All children must be accompanied by ticketed adults. He had been in the institution for several years receiving treatment following a mental collapse.  \n\n\n\nHe could not bear to be inside\, claiming that he could not sleep behind a locked door. Join the wardens out on the merse\, as we open early to watch the geese flying against the dawn sky. \n\n\n\nBring warm\, waterproof clothing and footwear\, binoculars and a torch. Join us for a fascinating journey through the history of St Michael’s and South Parish Church. \n\n\n\nThis in-person event will take place at the beautiful location of St Michael’s and South Parish Church. Discover the stories of those laid to rest in this historic graveyard and learn about the rich heritage of the area. \n\n\n\nDuring the walk\, which lasts around 40 minutes\, we will visit around 12 graves – inlcuding Burns’ Mausoleum\, all on the main pathway and all having an incumbent of interest. \n\n\n\nHot chocolate will be available to buy in the church hall after the walk. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this event is weather dependant.

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, author Stephen Rutt will bring to life his award-winning 2019 book\, The Seafarers: A Journey Among Birds. He will talk about the seabirds that are so characteristic of the Scottish coastline\, the effect they’ve had on us and the effect we’ve had on them\, bringing his book up to date in the light of the bird flu crisis. \n\n\n\nStephen Rutt is a writer and amateur naturalist\, specialising in creative non-fiction prose and birds. He won the Saltire Society’s first book award\, as well as a Roger Deakin award for his debut book\, The Seafarers. His second book\, Wintering was one of The Times’s best nature books of the year for 2019. The Eternal Season\, his third book\, has been shortlisted for the Saltire Society’s non-fiction book of the year. His writing has been published by Granta.com\, The Guardian\, The Scotsman and Caught By The River. \n\n\n\nThis special Talk is organised as part of Dumfries Museum‘s exhibition\, The Ever Changing\, Changeless Sea\, running until July.

We’ll focus on Svalbard Barnacle Geese but get chances to meet other geese as well as wintering ducks and waders\, learning who stays and goes in springtime. Please come prepared for cold or wet weather and bring binoculars if you have some\, we’ll provide a telescope.  \n\n\n\nThis event is suitable for wheelchair access. Families welcome (though not suitable for younger children). All children must be accompanied by ticketed adults. Additional car park charge applies for non-RSPB members. \n\n\n\nPlease note\, as the reserve location is prone to flooding\, we ask that all individuals/groups attending provide a contact telephone number\, so we can notify you in advance if the event is cancelled. \n\n\n\nAccessibility Details: Firm\, surfaced path along the route. DESCRIPTION:Stories have been plucked from the wind and passed down to us from ancient days\, with the aid of goose feathers. The quills of scribes fluttered over a thousand years ago to record tales that were much older.  \n\n\n\nCome and experience storyteller Simon Lidwell bringing a selection of these to life. The tales will be chosen to imagine how the place we know as Dumfries has formed. What stories would early Iron age tell when they forded the river?  Why did Devorgilla build a bridge to get people to Whithorn? After each story there will be the opportunity to reflect and chat. There will also be the opportunity to find out more about writing using a “good goose quill pen” and making medieval ink – and perhaps you might like to have a go! \n\n\n\nThe event will be free to access\, but donations gratefully received. \n\n\n\n\nBOOK HERE
