SUMMARY:Conversing Building: TRIBUTARIES
DESCRIPTION:Tributaries brought together communities\, artists and scientists along the River Nith to explore the river\, its tributaries and the life they sustain. \n\n\n\nThrough activities including moth trapping\, bat walks\, water sampling\, birdwatching and species recording\, local people worked alongside scientists to observe and learn about the river and the ecological changes taking place around them. These encounters brought together different generations and forms of knowledge\, from scientific observation to lived experience of the river. \n\n\n\nThis knowledge and experience became the starting point for creative workshops with textile artist Elizabeth Stephenson in which participants designed and made traditional trade union-style banners reflecting their communities’ particular relationships with the river and its tributaries. \n\n\n\nThe banners joined the Salty Coo procession in this year’s Nithraid in August. \n\n\n\nThe trade union banner is a symbol of solidarity\, collective action and the demand for change. Here\, we extend that idea beyond the human: could solidarity also be imagined between species\, and between human and more-than-human communities? The banners celebrate the river and give visual expression to the interconnected lives that depend upon it. \n\n\n\nCollective making created space for conversation\, skill-sharing and intergenerational learning\, offering a practical and creative way to respond to environmental change. \n\n\n\nTributaries is an outreach project for Nithraid\, Dumfries’s annual river festival and boat race and we would like to continue the project.  If you would like information about how to become part of the banner making project please contact: nithriverunion@gmail.com  \n\n\n\nMany thanks to everyone involved in the making and……. \n\n\n\nEmily McLatchie (Artist – Thornhill workshops) Old School ThornhillDeborah Iden and the Moniaive InitiativeKirsty Johnson and Nith LifeMalcolm Haddow at SWSEIC\, Antoine Lemaire at Alouette Nature Tours\, Leah Belford  – Wallacehall Academy  \n\n\n\nNithraid and the Tributaries Project are EcoArt productions

SUMMARY:Write! On Tour
DESCRIPTION:WRITE! is The Stove’s regular Creative Writing night\, and this month\, in honour of the Wild Goose Festival\, WRITE! is on tour\, coming to the beautiful Mill on the Fleet! WRITE! is all about letting your imagination guide your hand and being inspired by those around you. \n\n\n\n In this session we’ll chat about geese & migration\, using these themes as prompts and the opportunity to write based on the inspiration. It might be a character sketch\, or a piece of description or dialogue. The key thing is that it will be your words\, and they’d never have been born if you’d stayed at home that night. \n\n\n\nSessions are expertly guided by thought-provoking prompts\, offering dedicated time for free-flowing expression. Afterward\, participants have the opportunity to share their creations within supportive groups\, receiving valuable tips to enhance their writing skills and boost confidence. Whether you’re rediscovering the joy of the creative process or seeking inspiration for your existing project\, Write fosters a collaborative and experimental environment. Fuel your next big project with the friendly encouragement and creative energy that defines Write. \n\n\n\nOpen to: everyone! It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never written anything before\, or if you’re an established author looking for a brief shot of espresso creativity. It’s not a course\, so you can attend any or all sessions\, as you wish. \n\n\n\nSo come along. We’ll provide inspiration and a supportive group of new friends. All you need to do is bring your pen*\, engage your heid\, and write! \n\n\n\n(*Of course it’s fine to bring a laptop or gadget instead of pen and paper: words are words\, whatever the medium!) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Information\n\n\n\nFreeThis event will take place at Mill on the Fleet\, High Street\, Gatehouse of Fleet\, Castle Douglas DG7 2HS \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility Informati

SUMMARY:Loose Goose in Stranraer
DESCRIPTION:Every journey has an edge. \n\n\n\nFor The Loose Goose\, that edge is Stranraer — where Dumfries & Galloway meets the sea\, and the land opens out towards somewhere else. \n\n\n\nAfter travelling across the region\, she’s arrived at the end of her migration. But perhaps an ending is just another kind of beginning. \n\n\n\nCome and meet the Goose for stories\, sounds\, making and imagination. Share something about the place you call home\, the journeys you’ve made\, or the places you dream of going. \n\n\n\nBecause stories travel too. They cross borders\, pass between people and carry pieces of places with them. \n\n\n\nAt the edge of the land\, where might your story take off? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Information\n\n\n\nFree / Drop-In SessionsThis event will take place at Creative Stranraer\, 23 King St\, Stranraer DG9 7JU and The Unexpected Garden\, Harbour Street\, Stranraer\, DG9 7RD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility Information

SUMMARY:What Can The Geese Teach Us About Our Food Culture? with The Greenhouse
DESCRIPTION:When people think of Dumfries & Galloway’s food culture\, we might think of our sprawling green pastures home to spring lamb\, Belted Galloway beef and dairy herds. But we are also fertile soil for a huge variety of delicious vegetables\, fruits and herbs across smallholdings\, farms and market gardens across our region. The Greenhouse showcases our plentiful plantiful growers\, rustling up imaginative\, delicious and seasonal menus while exploring the food stories that tie us to our land and our past. \n\n\n\nBut food culture has never been static: just as the wintering geese change their migration route in response to weather patterns and food availability\, so has our food story evolved with invasions\, partnerships\, new trade routes\, technology and migration. And as external forces challenge our relationship with our current food culture\, October’s Greenhouse Supper Club invites us to ask: what parts of our food history do we want to keep\, and how could we adapt to a changing food future? \n\n\n\nOur October Supper Club welcomes you to a four-course\, plant based evening meal in a beautiful pastoral setting just out of Dumfries. Complimentary tea and coffee\, BYOB. We can cater to dietary requirements with at least a week’s notice. \n\n\n\n£30 per head 18:30 for 19:00 dinnerShawhead Village Hall DG2 9SL \n\n\n\nBook via this link: forms.gle/o1znQC8sAje7Kn3w7

By discussing\, imagining\, and making together we can listen to what the living world is asking of us during the current mass extinction. \n\n\n\nTaking our places as stewards and advocates for all the wild things around us we will use the risograph printer to create posters and zines which can share what we learn in the festival hub and beyond. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Information\n\n\n\nOur workshops are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. We suggest a standard contribution of £25\, but you are welcome to choose the amount that feels manageable for you.
