A Traditional Halloween in Dumfries

October 28, 2022 @ 4:00 pm 8:00 pm

People may think of Halloween as being a modern American import but it really isn’t! The Hallowed or Holy Evening was originally a church festival to commemorate the souls of those who had died. It has since developed into a weird and wonderful time of the year but many of its original elements remain and many of them are distinctly Scottish with lots of connections to The Great Bard himself, Robert Burns.

This spectacular event will bring the past to life with historical re-enactors, music and light: it promises to be a treat for the senses.

On a night leading up to the event, Judith Hewitt, Museums Curator East, will deliver a talk on the history of Halloween (in 2018, she curated the exhibition ‘Glitter and Gravedust: Halloween past and present’).
